September Birthstone- SAPPHIRE

The Sapphire has been a popular gem since the middle ages.  Medieval clergy wore them to symbolize heaven and commoners wore them as a means of attracting a heavenly blessing. 

Did you know: The Sapphire is the hardest ,most transparent material-next to the diamond.  For this reason, the popular Apple Watches feature lab-created sapphire glass in its screen.

The birthstone for July is the Ruby.  In ancient times,  it was thought that the glowing red color was a due to an inextinguishable inner fire.  These are one of the most valuable gems.

May’s birthstone is the EMERALD.  How appropriate of a match to the landscape turning into the beautiful green as we finish up the spring season this month.  Here are a few facts about this stone:

  • Emerald is one of only 4 recognized precious gemstones (Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond and Emerald).
  • Emeralds have a lower density than diamonds, making them appear larger/carat in size.
  • Value is determined by the stone’s color, clarity, cut and carat weight.
  • This was one of Cleopatra’s favorite stones.
